Know Your Rights
Florida requires all private investigators to hold an active license issued by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS). Before hiring any investigator, verify their credentials.
Confirm any investigator holds a valid Florida license before engaging their services. The FDACS license lookup is free and takes under a minute.
Chapter 493 of the Florida Statutes governs all private investigation activity in the state. It defines what licensed investigators may and may not do, including surveillance, background checks, and OSINT.
Licensed PIs in Florida may conduct surveillance in public spaces, research public records, perform background investigations, conduct skip tracing, and document evidence for legal proceedings. They may not trespass, wiretap, or impersonate law enforcement.
